Sugarcane yields

Some of the demonstrated increases in the percentage of sucrose in the sugarcane have been accompanied by overall decreases in sugarcane yield per unit area. Other experiments have shown no effects on yield.

Ripening Agent. A new potential use for vanillin is as a ripening agent to increase the yield of sucrose in sugarcane by the treatment of the cane crop a few weeks before harvest.

Cereals can yield around 1500-3000 litres of gasoline equivalent (lge)/ha sugarcane, 3000-6000 lge/ha sugarheet, 2000-4000 lge/ha vegetable oil crops, 700-1300 litres of diesel equivalent (lde)/ha and palm oil, 2500-3000 lde/ha (IEA, 2007). In addition, there are novel biofuel production processes under development, for example biodiesel from marine algae, which are claimed to have a 15 times higher yield per ha than rapeseed. 

The bipyridylium compounds have also been Used experimentally to desiccate sugarcane leaves, and are more effective for this purpose than substituted phenols, oils, and chlorates. The yield of treated cane remained more or less constant for several weeks, and then increased again as new leaves formed. The yield of sucrose decreased as a result of treatment, partly because of the temporary reduction of photosynthesis, and partly as a result of increased stalk-moisture.800...
