Owing to their unique and delicate flavour, species of the genus Passiflora have been the subject of intensive research on their volatile constituents [13]. The purple passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims) is a tropical fruit native to Brazil but is now grown in most tropical and subtropical countries [50]. Purple passion fruit is cultivated in Australia, India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa [48]. Yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis t flavicarpa) is one of the most popular and best known tropical fruits, having a floral, estery aroma with an exotic tropical sulfury note [62]. Yellow passion fruit is cultivated in Brazil, Hawaii, Fiji, and Taiwan [48]. Because of its more desirable flavour, the purple passion fruit is preferred for consumption as fresh fruit, whereas the yellow passion fruit is considered more suitable for processing [28]. [Pg.195]

Taiwan Forest ecosystems. A RAINS-ASIA impact module is used to assess ecosystem sensitivity to acid deposition and to calculate critical load of sulfur to six forest ecosystems in Taiwan (Lin, 1998). Results indicate that forest ecosystems in Taiwan are very sensitive to acid deposition due to their low soil pH (< 5.5). Lowland subtropical forest ecosystems in Taiwan have low or moderate low critical loads for S suggesting that they are vulnerable to acid deposition (Table 5). [Pg.506]

The Kmoshio, the western boundary current of the subtropical North Pacific, begins to form to east of the Philippines. It flows northwards along the coast of Luzon and continues northward east of Taiwan after making a slight exclusion into the Luzon Strait. It has a significant impact on the ocean circulation of northern SCS. It is noted that the pressure field across the Luzon Strait and around Taiwan Island is an important dynamic mechanism governing both the circulation in the northern SCS and the intrusion of the Pacific waters into the SCS through the Luzon Strait. [Pg.57]

In certain regions, heavy rainfall is closely related to the low-level jet. For example, during the early summer rainy season in subtropical China and Japan, extremely heavy rainfall (at least 100 mm/day) is one of the most disastrous weather phenomena. As in other parts of East Asia, extremely heavy rainfall is also found by meteorologists in Taiwan to be closely associated with a low-level jet. For example, there was an 84% likelihood that a low-level jet of at least 12.5 m/sec would be present at 700 mb (about 3 km) 12 hr before the start of the rainfall event. They concluded that the low-level jet may form to the south of heavy rainfall as part of the secondary circulation driven by convective latent heating. [Pg.102]
