Throughout the book there are worked examples to illustrate the use of the theory and at the end of each chapter there are problems to be solved by the reader. These are seen as an important part of the book because in solving the problems the reader is encouraged to develop the subject material beyond the level covered in the text. Actually, the first attempts to use the electron density rather than the wave function for obtaining information about atomic and molecular systems are almost as old as is quantum mechanics itself and date back to the early work of Thomas, 1927 and Fermi, 1927. In the present context, their approach is of only historical interest. We therefore refrain from an in-depth discussion of the Thomas-Fermi model and restrict ourselves to a brief summary of the conclusions important to the general discussion of DFT. As originally conceived, this handbook was to include worked examples of estimation methods for a group of benchmark chemicals for which reliable properties exist. The advantage of this approach is that the reader is likely to find it easier to apply the estimation methods if there are examples to follow. This proved to be more difficult than was expected and not all these benchmark chemicals are fully treated. Ideally, the estimated values should correspond closely with measured values. In some cases there are significant discrepancies, and this serves to reinforce the message that there remains a need to improve these methods in both accuracy and scope.
