General population studies indicate that the activity of ALAD is inhibited at very low PbB levels, with no threshold yet apparent. ALAD activity was inversely correlated with PbB levels over the entire range of 3-34 pg/dL in urban subjects never exposed occupationally (Hemberg and Nikkanen 1970). Other reports have confirmed the correlation and apparent lack of threshold in different age groups and exposure categories (children—Chisolm et al. 1985 children—Roels and Lauwerys 1987 adults—Roels et al. 1976). Inverse correlations between PbB levels and ALAD activity were found in mothers (at delivery) and their newborns (cord blood). PbB levels ranged from approximately 3 to 30 g/dL (Lauwerys et al. 1978). [Pg.60]

Some evidence exists of disturbances of the CCK system in pathological anxiety. For instance, Lydiard and co-workers [1992] reported that patients with panic disorder have significantly lower cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of CCK-8S than do control subjects. The same group measured CCK-8S in patients with bulimia nervosa [Lydiard et al. 1993], who were found to have significantly lower levels of CCK-8 than the comparison subjects. CCK-8 concentrations were inversely correlated with scores on the anger-hostility, anxiety, and interpersonal sensitivity subscales of the Symptom Checklist-90—Revised [SCL-90-R]. [Pg.423]

Recently, Arner and coworkers investigated the amount of perilipin protein and lipolysis rates in human subcutaneous adipocytes of non-obese and obese women [523]. A polymorphism in intron 6 (rs891460 A/G) in the perilipin gene seems to be associated with a 50% decrease in perilipin expression and increased basal lipolysis (AA vs. GG carriers) in adipocytes of the obese women, which in subjects matched for body mass index and adipocyte volume was inversely correlated with the plasma concentrations of NEFA and glycerol and thus may contribute to the development of insulin resistance. Furthermore, they found two- to four-fold increases in noradrenaline-induced lipolysis [523]. These data also reinforce the role of perilipin for the regulation of lipolysis in human fat cells. [Pg.297]

When the data for all subjects were combined, palmitic acid (16 0) and oleic acid (18 ln-9) were inversely correlated with phase angle (Figs. 3 and 4). On the other hand, the three n-3 PUFA derived from 18 3n-3 (20 5n-3,22 5n-3, and 22 6n-3) were positively correlated with phase angle (Figs. 5,6 and 7). These same serum phospholipid fatty acids were also found to be significantly different between SCD subjects and controls (Table 2). The only fatty acid that was different in SCD sub-... [Pg.289]

So what did happen to the thermostability of SSII during adaptation for activity in the cold P3C9 is less thermostable than its mesophilic counterpart SSII, with a half-life of inactivation at 70°C that decreased approximately threefold. However, there is no strict inverse correlation between stability and low temperature activity during the evolution. While low temperature activity was improved, thermal stability both increased and decreased, although the overall trend was toward decrease (Fig. 19). This suggests that, rather than being inversely coupled, thermal stability is essentially decoupled from low-temperature activity. And, since most mutations are deleterious, stability decreases when not subject to any selective pressure. [Pg.200]
