Subject index reduction

My former student Guy Montgomery, who is now a researcher at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, demonstrated experimentally that placebo pain reduction cannot be completely explained by the patient s emotional state - or by any other factor that should affect a person s whole body instead of just part of it. He put a placebo cream on the index finger of one hand of his subjects and nothing at all on their other hand. Then he induced pain by putting heavy weights on the subjects index...

In vivo studies were also conducted by several researchers. Anraku et al. (2009) examined the antioxidant effects of water-soluble chitosan in normal subjects by measuring the reduction of indices of oxidative stress. Treatment with chitosan for 4weeks produced a significant decrease in levels of plasma glucose and the atherogenic index, and led to an increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Chitosan treatment also lowered the ratio of oxidized to reduced albumin and increased total plasma antioxidant activity. Further, Anraku et al. (2011) proved the antioxidant effects of high MW chitosan in normal volunteers, and the obtained results were consistent with previous results observed by Anraku et al. (2009). 

When the reduction is completed, the flask is connected with a condenser and the mixture subjected to distillation. The boiling point of constant boiling hydrobromic acid is 125-126° at 760 mm., but it must be remembered that in distilling the product from the sulfuric acid mixture, the thermometer reading should not be relied upon as an index to the composition of the distillate. Towards the end of the distillation the thermometer may rise to 130° and above, when water with only traces of acid distils from the sulfuric acid residue. Upon redistillation of the product the thermometer reading may be relied upon. For many uses a product free from traces of... 

Examples of the reduction of the number of equations abound. With adiabatic reactors in the steady state, the temperature is a function of the composition (see [A, D, F] and the introductions to papers under Adiabatic in the Index of Subjects in Publications.) This is the case also with the catalyst particle (see I, Ch. 2, and [81, 122] and Example 9). Examples of reduction in the number of equations because one or more can be solved immediately are given in Example 12 see also [280] and [310]. 

In 9 healthy subjects, oral indometacin 50 mg every 6 hours for 4 doses abolished the hypotensive response to intravenous hydralazine 150 mierograms/kg, and the subjects only responded when given another dose of hydralazine 30 minutes later. A study in 7 patients with pulmonary hypertension given indometacin 50 mg and hydralazine 350 mierograms/kg, both intravenously, either alone, or concurrently, also found that the effects of hydralazine (reduction in systemic arterial pressure, heart rate, cardiac index) were reduced by indometacin. In contrast, another study in 9 healthy subjects found that oral indometacin 25 mg four times daily for 2.5 days did not affect the hypotensive response to a single 200-mierogram/kg intravenous dose of hydralazine.
