In the course of studies on aminoaciduria in Fanconi s syndrome, Dent (Dl) isolated from the urine of the subject investigated a simple peptide identified as serylglycylglycine. Carsten (Cl) found in normal urine several peptides containing in every case one of the dicarboxylic amino acids. He discovered also two tetrapeptides, one of them consisting of equimolar amounts of aspartic acid and glycine, and the second composed of glycine, alanine, and glutamic acid in the ratio 2 1 1. The first of these tetrapeptides was also found in the urine of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

The subject of the effect of glutamic acid on "intelligence," as well as many related problems, needs to be investigated fully, bearing in mind the considerations we have presented here. 

Sodium Ion. The excessive intake of sodium ion coming from other than NaCl should be noticed, though reduced intake of NaCl is now a matter of great concern. Monosodium glutamate (MSG), for instance, is a subject of discussion. Since MSG effectively provides umami taste, it has been very popular as a Japanese seasoning. In the United States, MSG has currently been mark as a cause of "Chinese restaurant syndrome". In addition, beef, liver, blood and their processed foods contains a large amount of sodium ion. Sine sodium ion combines with aspartic acid and glutamic acid residues in protein, study of affinity of acidic amino acids to sodium ion has to be set out first.

Table XI also compares the amino acid analyses of Merino 64 s wool with that of cuticle obtained by subjecting the wool to ultrasonic irradiation in 98 % formic acid (Bradbury and Chapman, 1964). The cuticle contained less arginine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, leucine, and phenylalanine than whole wool, but more cystine, proline, serine, and valine. Cys-teic acid is probably formed during the ultrasonic treatment. These analyses cannot be accounted for quantitatively on the basis of a simple combination of low-sulfur and high-sulfur protein fractions, but the data suggest that the cuticle would not contain as much material in the a-helical conformation as the original fiber. The values obtained by Bradbury (1960) in an earlier examination of cuticle-rich material obtained by a mechanical descaling technique are in reasonable agreement with the values in Table XI.

In a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, concurrent oral administration of 500 mg glutamic acid tds with vincristine reduced the incidence of subjective and objective signs of vincristine neurotoxicity (54). There were no differences in constipation, weakness, or loss of knee reflexes. There were no severe gastrointestinal adverse effects. 

Homoserine elutes from the 60 cm column of a Beckman 120C analyzer just prior to glutamic acid and has a color value 95 % that of leucine (Hofmann 1964). Better separation of homoserine and glutamic acid can be achieved by lowering the pH of the eluting buffer to 3.20 (Ambler 1965) or to 2.80 (Schroeder et al. 1967). Homoserine has a mobility of 1.37 compared to 1.00 for aspartic acid in pH 1.9 electrophoresis. Subject index p. 201...
