This chapter presents guidelines for correct sentence structure and word usage. Other chapters of this book present topics also related to good writing style. Chapter 2 discusses the parts of a scientific paper Chapter 3 presents an overview of the editorial process. Chapters in Part 2 address more specialized rules for usage see, especially, Chapter 9 on grammar, punctuation, and spelling and Chapter 10 on editorial style. 

Because of their close biogenetic relationship, earlier reviews (1-3) treated the ajmaline alkaloids together with the sarpagine alkaloids. The number of known structures in the two series has grown markedly, however, and to do this now would require a long and time consuming editorial process, which would diminish the relevance of the information udien published. These different strands come together in the current set of two books. An international editorial kick-off workshop was initiated by Christensen and organized with the help of Louis L. Bucciarelli at MIT in May 2012. The main purpose was to define the objectives, structure, and content of the volumes. After introductory presentations by workshop host Bucciarelli, Gary Downey, and Jamison, an intensive process of discussions began. And, as the French say, Du choc des idees jaillit la lumihe at first confrontational ideas finally result in understanding and constructive proposals.
