Although the ergogenic properties of narcotics in elite sport are rather limited, their formerly widespread use (see Chapters 1 and 3) and the fact that modern elite sport represents enormous physiological demands and risks of injuries, the misuse of narcotics has been prohibited in competition since systematic doping controls were initiated in the 1960s.
