Streptomyces kasugaensis

According to data for 1973, nearly 40000 tons of kasugamycin were used in Japan against rice blast. This antibiotic was discovered by Umezawa in the metabolites of Streptomyces kasugaensis culture (Umezawa et al., 1965). Its structure was found to be 5-amino-2-methyl-6-(2,3,4,5,6-pentahydroxycycIohexyloxy)-pyran-... [Pg.476]

Kasugamycin (2), a water-soluble and basic antibiotic, is produced by Streptomyces kasugaensis [14]. Chemically it is composed of three moieties D-inositol, kasug-amine (2,3,4,5-tetradeoxy-2,4-diaminohexopyranose) and an imino acetic acid side chain [14-16]. [Pg.542]

There are two commercial fungicides, the antibiotics blasticidin S and kasugamycin, that act via the inhibition of protein biosynthesis (Figure 4.19). Blasticidin S is a fermentation product obtained from cultures of Streptomyces griseochromogenes, and has specific activity in the control of P. oryzae, similar to kasugamycin, a secondary metabolite of S. kasugaensis. However, much of the earlier work on mode of action was carried out using another antibiotic, cycloheximide. [Pg.96]
