This reaction can also be mn in a continuous fashion. In the initial reactor, agitation is needed until the carbon disulfide Hquid phase reacts fully. The solution can then be vented to a tower where ammonia and hydrogen sulfide are stripped countercurrendy by a flow of steam from boiling ammonium thiocyanate solution. Ammonium sulfide solution is made as a by-product. The stripped ammonium thiocyanate solution is normally boiled to a strength of 55—60 wt %, and much of it is sold at this concentration. The balance is concentrated and cooled to produce crystals, which are removed by centrifiigation. [Pg.152]

Precipitation is affected by pH, solubiUty product of the precipitant, ionic strength and temperature of the aqueous stream, and the presence of metal complexes. For each metal precipitant, there is an optimum pH where its solubiUty is lowest and hence, the highest removals may be achieved. When an aqueous stream contains various metals, the precipitation process caimot be optimized for each metal, sometimes making it difficult to achieve effluent targets for each. SolubiUty products depend on the form of the metal compound and ate lowest for metal sulfides, reflecting the relative insolubiUty of these compounds. SolubiHty of carbon dioxide in ethanolamines is affected by temperature, amine solution strength, and carbon dioxide partial pressure. Information on the performance of amines is available in the Hterature and from amine manufacturers. Values for the solubiHty of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide mixtures in monoethanolamine and for the solubiHty of carbon dioxide in diethanolamine are given (36,37). The polysulfide base material contains 50—80% of the polyfunctional mercaptan, which is a clear, amber, sympy Hquid polymer with a viscosity at 25°C of 35, 000 Pa-s(= cP), an average mol wt of 4000, a pH range of 6—8, and a ntild, characteristic mercaptan odor. Fillers are added to extend, reinforce, harden, and color the base. They may iaclude siUca, calcium sulfate, ziac oxide, ziac sulfide [1314-98-3] alumina, titanium dioxide [13463-67-7] and calcium carbonate. The high shear strength of the Hquid polymer makes the compositions difficult to mix. The addition of limited amounts of diluents improves the mix without reduciag the set-mbber characteristics unduly, eg, dibutyl phthalate [84-74-2], tricresyl phosphate [1330-78-5], and tributyl citrate [77-94-1]. [Pg.492]

The proton affinities (gas phase) of thiirane and other three-membered heterocycles have been determined azirane (902.5), thiirane (819.2), phosphirane (815.0), oxirane (793.3 kJ moF ) (80JA5151). Increasing s character in the lone electron pairs decreases proton affinities. Data derived from NMR chemical shifts in chloroform indicate the order of decreasing basicity is azirane > oxirane > thiirane (73CR(B)(276)335). The base strengths of four-, five- and six-membered cyclic sulfides are greater than that of thiirane. [Pg.145]

A high-nickel alloy is used for increased strength at elevated temperature, and a chromium content in excess of 20% is desired for corrosion resistance. An optimum composition to satisfy the interaction of stress, temperature, and corrosion has not been developed. The rate of corrosion is directly related to alloy composition, stress level, and environment. The corrosive atmosphere contains chloride salts, vanadium, sulfides, and particulate matter. Other combustion products, such as NO, CO, CO2, also contribute to the corrosion mechanism. The atmosphere changes with the type of fuel used. Applicability Most hazardous waste slurried in water can be mixed directly with cement, and the suspended solids will be incorporated into the rigid matrices of the hardened concrete. This process is especially effective for waste with high levels of toxic metals since at the pH of the cement mixture, most multivalent cations are converted into insoluble hydroxides or carbonates. Metal ions also may be incorporated into the crystalline structure of the cement minerals that form. Materials in the waste (such as sulfides, asbestos, latex and solid plastic wastes) may actually increase the strength and stability of the waste concrete. It is also effective for high-volume, low-toxic, radioactive wastes. [Pg.180]

Nitro-filter cloths are composed of cellulose nitrate, which is an ester of cellulose. Any chemical compound that will saponify the ester will destroy the cloth. Caustic soda or potash in strengths of 2% at 70° C or over alkali sulfides, polysulfides and sulfohydrates or mixtures of ethyl alcohol and ether, ethyl, amyl and butyl acetates, pyridine, ferrous sulfates, and other reducing agents are detrimental to the cloth. [Pg.127]
