Because this problem is complex several avenues of attack have been devised in the last fifteen years. A combination of experimental developments (protein engineering, advances in x-ray and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), various time-resolved spectroscopies, single molecule manipulation methods) and theoretical approaches (use of statistical mechanics, different computational strategies, use of simple models) [5, 6 and 7] has led to a greater understanding of how polypeptide chains reach the native confonnation. 

Decision Process. In many cases, the decision regarding the need for exposure reduction measures is obvious and no formal statistical procedure is necessary. However, as exposure criteria are lowered, and control becomes more difficult, close calls become more common, and a logical decision-making process is needed. A typical process is shown in Eigure 2. Even when decision making is easy it is useful to remember the process and the assumptions involved. Based on an evaluation, decisions are made regarding control. The evaluation and decision steps caimot be separated because the conduct of the evaluation, the strategy, measurement method, and data collection are all a part of the decision process. 

From these can be developed strategies and procedures for dealing with (I) estimation and (2) inferential statistics. The following has been directed more toward inferential statistics because of its broader utility. 

Because X-ray counting rates are relatively low, it typically requires 100 seconds or more to accumulate adequate counting statistics for a quantitative analysis. As a result, the usual strategy in applying electron probe microanalysis is to make quantitative measurements at a limited collection of points. Specific analysis locations are selected with the aid of a rapid imaging technique, such as an SEM image prepared with backscattered electrons, which are sensitive to compositional variations, or with the associated optical microscope. 

Estimates of the lifetime COl are needed for temporal and international comparisons and for assessment of the efficiency of prevention strategies. During the first years of HIV/AIDS treatment, direct lifetime costs were only estimated by simple projections based on retrospective data. Later, specific statistical tools were adopted to estimate life expectancy and lifetime costs. The results of lifetime estimates are very sensitive to imputed assumptions. Table 4 demonstrates some studies in this field.
