Stirrup

If the distribution network consists of pipes with screwed rubber sockets and only the service pipes are of steel, these can be protected with zinc or magnesium anodes. This requires an insulating service clip near the insulating connection. It is usually sufficient just to insulate the stirrup of the service clip since the rubber seal of the service pipe acts as an insulator. In the United Kingdom, the protection of numerous service pipes has been proved with magnesium anodes [31]. 

The two homologous repeats, each of 88 amino acids, at both ends of the TBP DNA-binding domain form two stmcturally very similar motifs. The two motifs each comprise an antiparallel p sheet of five strands and two helices (Figure 9.4). These two motifs are joined together by a short loop to make a 10-stranded p sheet which forms a saddle-shaped molecule. The loops that connect p strands 2 and 3 of each motif can be visualized as the stirmps of this molecular saddle. The underside of the saddle forms a concave surface built up by the central eight strands of the p sheet (see Figure 9.4a). Side chains from this side of the P sheet, as well as residues from the stirrups, form the DNA-binding site. No a helices are involved in the interaction area, in contrast to the situation in most other eucaryotic transcription factors (see below). 

TFIIB is arranged in two domains, both of which have the cyclin fold described in Chapter 6. Both domains bind to the TBP-TATA box complex at the C-terminal stirrup and helix of TBP. The phosphate and sugar moities of DNA form extensive non-sequence-specific contacts with TFIIB both upstream and downstream of the middle of the TATA box.

Stirrups are required for support rotations greater than 2 degrees. 

The middle knife edge rests on a plate on the central column of the balance and is the point of support. In an analytical balance, the knife edges and plate are made from agate or synthetic sapphire. The stirrups carrying the balance pans rest on the side knife edges. The beam is provided with a long pointer that indicates the deviation of the beam from a horizontal position on a scale. When the beam is horizontal, the pointer is opposite zero of the scale. 

The Brit Army adopted the Webley hinged frame in 1894. This had a stirrup-shaped lock which engaged over the barrel stop to produce a very rigid frame. Development of the revolver has subsequently produced no new principles but many small innovations Self-Loading Pistols.

The ring must be completely wet with the liquid, but with platinum rings suspended by platinum stirrups this is usually easily achieved by flaming the rings gently. The method may be used for interfacial tensions also, but here the contact angle must be carefully watched, as zero contact angles with two liquids are more difficult to obtain than with one liquid only. Vibration must be avoided.
