Stimulant Irritant Expectorants

Expectorants and antitussive agents may be broadly classified into the following three categories (/) Sedative Expectorants (n) Stimulant (Irritant) Expectorants iii) Centrally Acting Antitussive Agents. 

Almost colorless to slightly yellow liquid with an aromatic, pungent odor and the taste of ammonia, d 0.90. Forms an opalescent mixture with water miscible with alcohol. therap CAT Reflex respiratory stimulant. therap cat (vei) By inhalation respiratory and circulatory stimulant. Internally expectorant, diaphoretic, antacid, carminative. Externally counterirritant, and in dilut -ed form to relieve the irritation of insect stings and bites. 

It has been used as a mild expectorant and relieves gripping. Applied externally, camphor acts as a rubefacient and mild analgesic and is employed in liniments as a counter-irritant in fibrositis, neuralgia and similar conditions. Camphor has been administered as a solution in oil by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection as a circulatory and respiratory stimulant, but there is little evidence of its value for this purpose (121-125). 

Uses Plasticizer for cellulose esters and ethers in mfg. of plastics esp. celluloid in lacquers, varnishes, explosives, embalming fluids pyrotechnics moth repellent mfg. of cymene preservative in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics topical anti-infective and antipruritic veterinary medicine (internally as stimulant and carminative, externally as antiseptic) odorant flavor insect repellent chem. intermediate mfg. of incense mild analgesic and rubefacient in liniments counter-irritant in treatment of fibrositis and neuralgia mild expectorant mild local anesthetic...
