Hypersensitivity reactions, such as urticaria and angio-edema, are relatively common in subjects with aspirin hypersensitivity. Purpura, hemorrhagic vasculitis, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and Lyell s syndrome have also been reported, but much less often. Fixed drug eruptions, probably hypersensitive in origin, are periodically described. In some patients they do not recur on rechallenge, that is the sensitivity disappears (74).

All major anticonvulsants have adverse effects on the skin, ranging from a mild maculopapular rash to life-threatening Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Lyell s syndrome (toxic epidermal necrolysis), severe forms of erythema multiforme.

Serious skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome and Lyell s syndrome) caused temporary withdrawal of isoxi-cam in several countries, even though an analysis of 1800 patients with rheumatoid arthritis or degenerative joint disease failed to confirm an increased risk (2).

While skin reactions to nevirapine cannot be prevented by the use of glucocorticoids (6,20), it is possible to induce tolerance to them, enabling treatment to continue (6). All the same, very severe skin reactions, with characteristics of both Stevens-Johnson syndrome and Lyell s syndrome, have occasionally been reported (21).
