There is continuing evidence pointing to the conelusion that DCs within the respiratory tract occupy a unique part of the immune surveillanee system both in terms of initiating immune responses and as an early-warning eomponent of the innate immune system. There is still much to learn about the ftmetion of these eells, partieularly relative to infectious diseases and the possibility of harnessing DC funetions to improve local immune responses to infeetious agents.
