Weather resistant solids such as coal or sulfur or ores are stored in uncovered piles from which they are retrieved with power shovels and conveyors. Other solids are stored in sibs. For short-time storage for process use, solids are stored in bins that are usually of rectangular cross section with cone bottoms and hooked up to process with conveyors. Therefore, for conditions of similarity of flow rt, K2, and Ttj are constant. Stepanoff [12] has shown that the velocity diagrams at the impeller are geometrically similar when the pumps are operating at the same efficiency for similar pumps or for the same pump at different speeds.

In the case of slurry pumps, passageways are larger than in water pumps to accommodate solids and the Anderson area ratio is difficult but useful to use. Unfortunately, many leading references on slurry pump design written in North America, such as the work of Herbrich (1991) and Wilson et al. (1992), continue to ignore the area ratio methods and focus on the Stepanoff school, which believes that the impeller is the main producer of head and efficiency. 

Stepanoff (1993) described various forms of vortices from a free vortex, with angu lar velocity co inversely proportional to the square of the radius to a super forced vortex, in which the angular velocity is proportional to the radius, as shown in Table 8-1.
