Stent contraindication

Apart from clinical or radiological signs of gastrointestinal perforation there are no contraindications to stent placement as long as the guidewire can be safely passed across the obstruction. 

Clinical and/or radiologic evidence of intestinal perforation is the only absolute contraindication for stent placement. Tumours that are too long and/or carmot be passed by a guidewire and stent caimot be treated.

Contraindications to the placement of central airway stents are curable malignant tumors. Due to the difficulty in removing metallic stents, these should not be placed in patients with a curable disease. Metallic stents that have been incorporated into the mucosa are extremely difficult to retrieve at endoscopy and surgery. However, in emergency situations with hyperacute airway compression and the need for rapid restoration of adequate pulmonary ventilation, temporary placement of a (preferably) plastic stent may be indicated.

There are many recent series reporting results of stent graft repairs in AVG but with small number of patients and limited follow-up contraindications of this method include overt graft infection, presence of skin erosion, need to cross the elbow or axilla and lack of adequate landing zones [18, 19]. Aneurysms are often associated with proximal stenosis and both lesions should be treated simultaneously [18].
