Furfural was first isolated in the eady nineteenth century. Dobereiner is credited with the discovery. He obtained a small amount of a yellow "oil" (too Htde to characterize) as a by-product in the preparation of formic acid (8). Other chemists found that the same "oil" having a charactedstic aroma could be obtained by boiling finely divided vegetable materials such as oats, com, sawdust, bran, etc, with aqueous sulfuric acid or other acids (9,10). The oil was present in the Hquid resulting from condensation of the vapors produced during heating. The empirical formula was determined by Stenhouse... 

Roccella fuciformis. Picroroccelline, C2jH2aOsN2, m.p. 192-4°, gives benzaldehyde and benzoic acid on oxidation (Stenhouse and Groves, Annalen, 1877, 185, 14). 

One group of people who may be at greater risk are those who are exposed to cyanide but are unable to smell the chemical (Kirk and Stenhouse 1953 Snodgrass 1996). Patients with motor neuron disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) possess a disorder in cyanide detoxification that may result in their higher susceptibility to cyanide (Kato et al. 1985).

Dr. Stenhouse, who examined the volatile oil of olibanum, found it to be colorless, and similar to turpentine, but possessed of a more agreeable odor. Its composition is represented by the formula CM-HK 0.

It was first prepd by an English chemist, Stenhouse, in 184 8 by distilling a mixt of PA in water with bleaching powd(Refs 1 2). Nitrochloroform is a powerful irritant and affects all body surfaces. It causes lachrymation, vomiting, bronchitis pulmonary endema, A concn of 1 ppm causes a smarting in the eyes.
