Health, Environmental, Quarantine and Other Regulations Many countries have strict regulations designed to protect the ecosystem and agrochemical business. For example any matrix material derived from pork, beef, sheep or horse tissue has to be accompanied with a Veterinary Certificate confirming that the matrix material is free of certain specified diseases before it can be imported into the EU. The Australian import restrictions are even tougher and require the importer to obtain prior permission to import plant and animal materials and products derived from biological materials. To get an import license it is necessary to complete an application, which includes information from the producer about the actual production process used to prepare the matrix ... [Pg.276]

The fruitflies, including the Mediterranean fruitfly, and various Australian species, are of particular concern in both quarantine and commercial contexts, and can be controlled by doses as low as 75-100 Gy (Heather et al., 1991 Bur-ditt, 1992). These doses do not result in adverse reactions in the fruit (Moy, 1985 Heather, 1993). Based on very extensive research, generic doses of 150 Gy have been recommended for fruitfly in all fruit by the Task Force on Irradiation, as a Quarantine Treatment convened by The International Consultative Group on Food Irradiation. Similarly, a generic dose of 300 Gy has been recommended for all pests other than fruitfly, based on data for 13 pests from six orders of Insecta, and a criterion of inhibition of reproduction. [Pg.188]

Recently, Australia has transferred most of its safflower production from Queensland and New South Wales to Victoria and the south, where rainfall is more reliable. Australia has not been able to produce a sustained, reliable production for world markets. Severe quarantine laws have not allowed more modem varieties of safflower planting seed to be imported thus most Australian seed is quite low in oil content. [Pg.1138]
