Statistics principles

A key element in planning and conducting clinical trials is to ensure that they have scientific validity and objectivity. This is particularly relevant with respect to Phase II and III studies, where it is desired to demonstrate a positive benefit to risk outcome. Responses to a drug among a patient population are rarely homogeneous and clear-cut. Thus, sound statistical principles must be applied in order to be able to distinguish significant effects from random events. 

In this paper we have endeavored to show some of the statistical principles underlying wavefront sensing. It is important to realize that the problem is inherently one of parameter estimation because as such it is part of a significant literature beyond traditional wavefront sensing.

The four basic statistical principles of experimental design are rephcation, randomization, concurrent ( local ) control and balance. In abbreviated form, these may be summarized as follows. 

Statistical principles should be applied to the planning and analysis of all test programmes. Details of commonly needed techniques are given in a series of ISO standards as well as in standard text books. An alternative is BS 903 Part 2, Guide to the application of statistics to rubber testing , which includes the basics of design of experiments and has a bibliography [3].
