Starting formula

For the sake of clarity, we have not followed a rigid system of nomenclature, such as starting formulas with the central atom followed by the ligands. If, for example, FCIO is written as ClOF, aii uninformed reader might be induced to think of the compound as a hypofluorite. 

In the preceding section it is seen how the theory of multicomponent systems gives the correct starting formulas for the analysis of ordinary and thermal diffusion in binary systems. Whereas these latter topics have been the subject of considerable investigation, there are a number of types of more complex diffusion problems of engineering interest for which little has been done. Several of these topics are discussed here, and an attempt is made to indicate to what extent they can be interpreted in terms of the theoretical development in the preceding sections.

Start by balancing the elements in the starting formula that are in only one other compound formula. Oxygen appears only in HjO. The 1 O in NaOH is balanced by 1 O in H2O. 

The next step is to balance elements in the starting formula that appear in compounds. Carbon is in CO2 and hydrogen is in H2O, so balance both elements by adding the appropriate coefficients to the product compounds.
