Stannic Oxide (White Tin Oxide, Tin Dioxide, Stannic Anhydride, Flowers of Tin Stannic Acid, Cassiterite). Sn02, mw 150.69, white powd, mp 1127°, bp 1800-1900° (subl), d 6.95 g/cc. Sol in coned sulfuric and coned hydrochloric acids, si sol in hot coned aq KOH or NaOH. Prepn is by reacting Sn with coned nitric acid (d 1.41 g/cc) on a w bath forming 0-stannic acid. The 0-stannic acid is then heated to a red heat and converted to Sn02. It is used as a chemical reagent and (see above) as an antifouling, flash and barrel wear reducing additive in propints... [Pg.454]

Octahydrodibenzothiophene (73) has been prepared by the following sequence. Friedel-Crafts acylation of 4,5,6,7-tetra-hydrobenzo[6]thiophene with succinic anhydride (87%) or with the ester chloride of succinic acid followed by hydrolysis (80%), yields the keto acid (74). Huang-Minlon reduction of 74 followed by cyclization of the derived acid chloride with stannic chloride yields l-keto-1,2,3,4,6,7,-8,9-octahydrodibenzothiophene (53) (Section V,A). Reduction of 53 gives 73 as a solid (overall yield 32%). [Pg.238]

Benzo[c]thiophene readily forms adducts with maleic anhydride (m.p. 153°-154°,5 6 148°-152°52), dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (see above),61 and A-phenylmaleimide (to give 62).52,61 In the last case the exo and endo isomers of the adduct may be separated by fractional crystallization.52 Benzo[c]thiophene reacts with acetyl nitrate by 1,3-addition in preference to substitution.6 It exhibits halochromy with concentrated sulfuric acid, trichloroacetic acid, and stannic chloride.62... [Pg.355]

Acetylation of pyrrole is difficult because if forms a 2 1 complex with stannic chloride (29CB226). Hence, under the conditions used for the other five-membered rings (i.e., acetic anhydride in the presence of one hundredth molar equivalent of stannic chloride or iodine), no reaction occurs, and only 20% acetylation is obtained if the molar proportion of the catalyst is reduced 10-fold. The effect of complex formation also shows up in the inhibition of stannic chloride-catalyzed acetylation of fu-ran or thiophene, on addition of pyrrole (67MI4). Catalyzed acetylation of 2-cyano-, 2-formyl-, or 2-methoxycarbonylpyrrole gives mainly 4-substitution (67CJC897) indicating that the catalyst must also be coordinated with the substrate l-methyl-3-nitropyrrole acetylates only in the 5-posi-tion (57CJC21). [Pg.112]
