Standard-taper ground-glass joints

The gas-washing cylinders are preferably without flanges. Those used by the submitters were prepared from 45-mm. Pyrex tubing, measured 28 cm. in length, and were fitted with 29/42 standard taper ground-glass joints. The inlet tubes extended two-thirds of the way into the cylinders. 

Two hundred seventy-five grams of phosphorus(III) chloride (2 mols) is weighed into a 500-ml., round-bottomed, three-necked flask equipped with standard-taper ground-glass joints and cooled by means of an ice-salt or Dry Ice bath. The necks of the flask are fitted, respectively, with a dropping funnel, a mercury-sealed, motor-driven stirrer, ... 

One hundred four milliliters of phosphorus(V) sulfochlo-ride (1.0 mol) is placed in a 500-ml. three-necked flask. The flask is fitted with a mercury-sealed stirrer, a water-cooled condenser to which a drying tube containing barium oxide is attached in a horizontal position, and a 250-ml. dropping funnel containing 58 ml. of anhydrous ethanol (1.0 mol). All joints may be rubber stoppers or, preferably, nonlubricated standard-taper ground-glass joints.

It is likely that the glassware in your organic kit has standard-taper ground-glass joints. For example, the air condenser in the figure consists of an inner (male) ground-glass joint at the bottom and an outer (female) joint at the top. Each end...

We have endeavored to develop a versatile cell which will be useful not only for analytical purposes but also for the study of secondary reactions and transient intermediates. The cell (see Fig. 7) basically consists of a large, standard taper, ground glass joint the outer portion of which has been sealed to provide a flat surface for the mercury cathode. A platinum wire was sealed into the cell wafl to permit electrical contact with the cathode in addition, the introduction or withdrawal of mercury or catholyte may be controlled by a Teflon stopcock provided in the drain at the bottom of the cathode compartment. The entire electrolysis chamber is surrounded by a double glass wall which serves as a thermostatic jacket through which a cooling or heating fluid may be circulated.
