The highly aHoyed austenitic stainless steels are proprietary modifications of the standard AISI 316 stainless steel. These have higher creep—mpture strengths than the standard steels, yet retain the good corrosion resistance and forming characteristics of the standard austenitic stainless steels. Materials of constmction include stainless steel, nickel, and titanium alloys (the latter for extremely corrosive wastes containing heavy metals). An especially insidious type of corrosion is localized corrosion (1—3,5) which occurs at distinct sites on the surface of a metal while the remainder of the metal is either not attacked or attacked much more slowly. Localized corrosion is usually seen on metals that are passivated, ie, protected from corrosion by oxide films, and occurs as a result of the breakdown of the oxide film. Generally the oxide film breakdown requires the presence of an aggressive anion, the most common of which is chloride. Localized corrosion can cause considerable damage to a metal stmcture without the metal exhibiting any appreciable loss in weight. Localized corrosion occurs on a number of technologically important materials such as stainless steels, nickel-base alloys, aluminum, titanium, and copper (see Aluminumand ALUMINUM ALLOYS Nickel AND nickel alloys Steel and Titaniumand titanium alloys).

Spiral-plate exchangers are fabricated from any material that can be cold worked and welded. Materials commonly used include carbo steel, stainless steel, nickel and nickel alloys, titanium, Hastelloys, and copper alloys. Baked phenolic-resin coatings are sometimes applied. Electrodes can also be wound into the assembly to anodically protect surfaces against corrosion.

The current-potential relationship ABCDE, as obtained potentiosta-tically, has allowed a study of the passive phenomena in greater detail and the operational definition of the passive state with greater preciseness. Bonhoeffer, Vetter and many others have made extensive potentiostatic studies of iron which indicate that the metal has a thin film, composed of one or more oxides of iron, on its surface when in the passive state . Similar studies have been made with stainless steel, nickel, chromium and other metals...

Copper, aluminum, stainless steel, nickel, or glass tubes bent into various shapes to fit the dimensions of the column oven provide the container for column packings [126]. Neither copper mor aluminum tubing is recommended as both metals are readily SKlditsd active, oxide-coated films formed on the inner walls promote decomposition or tailing of labile and polar solutes. Ptalnless steel is adequate for nonpolar samples but its catalytic activity precludes the analysis of labile solutes. Nickel, after acid passivation, and glass are the most inert column materials. 

Potential regions involving passivation. The passivation of the surfaces of metals of the transition metal series has been followed by in situ STM, which at first was expected to be usable only on unoxidized metal surfaces. Passivation has been followed on stainless steel, nickel, and titanium in various buffers and chloride-containing electrolytes. 

Nickel salts are used in electroplating, ceramics, pigments, and as catalysts. Sinter nickel oxide is used as charge material in the manufacture of alloy steel and stainless steel. Nickel is also used in alkaline (nickel-cadmium) batteries.
