US Patent 6,183,542 was issued in 2001 for a palladium membrane process. This process provides an apparatus that can handle high flow rates of gas, per unit area of membrane, while using a minimal amount of hydrogen-permeable material. This is accomplished by using stainless steel mesh elements to reinforce the thin-walled, palladium or palladium alloy membranes. Knife-line attack, immediately adjacent to the weld metal, is a special form of sensitization in stabilized austenitic stainless steels. Stabilizing elements (notably Ti and Nb) are added to stainless steels to prevent intergranular corrosion by restricting the formation of Cr-rich grain boundary precipitates. Specify stabilized grades of stainless steel. An alternative method to prevent chromium carbide formation is to charge the alloy with substances whose affinity for carbon is greater than that of chromium. These substances will react preferentially with the carbon, preventing chromium carbide formation and thereby leaving the chromium uniformly distributed in the metal. The carbon content of the alloy does not have to be reduced if sufficient quantities of these stabilizing elements are present.
