The second approach has been introduced more than 10 years ago as a major step in MS-based quantitative proteomics approaches. Stable isotope labeling by amino acids in cell cultures (SILAC Mann 2006) is the such a major protocol, and it has been used extensively for identification and quantitative evaluation of the expression levels of individual cellular proteins imder various conditions.
