New functions can be obtained by modifications of SLNs. Incorporation of Tween 80 and Poloxamer 188 can stabilize SLNs to achieve long-circulating or crossing blood-brain barrier effects [112], Recently, novel nanoparticles called polymer-lipid hybrid nanoparticles (PLNs) were developed [113]. They can entrap cationic anticancer agents (e.g., doxorubicin) effectively by incorporation of an anionic lipophilic polymer into lipids to treat multidrug-resistant (MDR) cancers. 

However, it is not recommended that one use rapidly distributing surfactants exclusively because surfactant mixtures (e.g., Lipoid S75/poloxamer 188 [30] or tyloxapol/lecithin [27]) might lead to lower particle sizes and higher storage stability compared with formulations with only one surfactant. The addition of sodium glycocholate to the aqueous phase as coemulsifying agent decreases the particle size, too [27],...

This short chapter deals primarily with the effect of surfactants on the properties of suspensions. Suspensions can be prepared without surfactants, there being an increasing use of polymers for stabilizing dispersions of solids in liquids. We will restrict discussion here to the effects of conventional surface-active agents but will deal also with the use of surface-active polymers such as the poloxamers, as these bridge the gap between two very large subjects. The emphasis of the chapter is towards pharmaceutical suspensions.
