Attacks some plastics, rubber, and coatings. Water solutions attack carbon steels at room temperature and stainless steels (especially if stabilized with sulfuric acid) above 176°F/80°C. Safety reminder When using HCN, it is xmwise to work alone. On small fires, use alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical, or COj extinguishers. FORMOSA CAMPHOR (76-22-2) see camphor. [Pg.507]

When drawn into thin filaments, sulfur exhibits like many other materials in this form outstanding strength properties (1,2,3), If quench cooled from above the transition temperature, it exhibits its plastio-elastic behavior. Although great effort has been expended searching for additives and techniques to stabilize plastic-elastic sulfur, little success has been achieved. There are only a few additives that stabilize these characteristics for even short periods of time. They include the elements ... [Pg.201]

Lead forms a normal and an acid sulfate and several basic sulfates. Basic and normal lead sulfates ate fundamental components in the operation of lead-sulfuric acid storage batteries. Basic lead sulfates also ate used as pigments and heat stabilizers (qv) in vinyl and certain other plastics. [Pg.69]

Methylphenol is converted to 6-/ f2 -butyl-2-methylphenol [2219-82-1] by alkylation with isobutylene under aluminum catalysis. A number of phenoHc anti-oxidants used to stabilize mbber and plastics against thermal oxidative degradation are based on this compound. The condensation of 6-/ f2 -butyl-2-methylphenol with formaldehyde yields 4,4 -methylenebis(2-methyl-6-/ f2 butylphenol) [96-65-17, reaction with sulfur dichloride yields 4,4 -thiobis(2-methyl-6-/ f2 butylphenol) [96-66-2] and reaction with methyl acrylate under base catalysis yields the corresponding hydrocinnamate. Transesterification of the hydrocinnamate with triethylene glycol yields triethylene glycol-bis[3-(3-/ f2 -butyl-5-methyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate] [36443-68-2] (39). 2-Methylphenol is also a component of cresyHc acids, blends of phenol, cresols, and xylenols. CresyHc acids are used as solvents in a number of coating appHcations (see Table 3). [Pg.67]

Kaolinite is the main constituent in china clay used to make porcelain. The layers are largely held together by van der Waals forces. Bentonite is used in cosmetics, as a filler for soaps, and as a plasticizer, and it is used in drilling-muds as a suspension stabilizer. Bentonite and kaolinite clays are used, after treatment with sulfuric acid to create acidic surface sites, as petroleum cracking catalysts. Asbestos also has a layered structure (Section 12.13). [Pg.390]
