St. Lawrence Island

This method was used in the examination of an Eskimo who died 1600 years ago. The body was discovered in a frozen state on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska in 1972 and remained frozen until it was brought to Fairbanks in 1973. Examination of the female individual revealed that she had a skull fracture, probably resulting from instant bunal caused by a landslide. Aspaitic acid laceiuization analysis of a tooth from the mummy yielded an age at death of 53 5 years, which correlated well with earlier estimates based upon morphological features. This method is an example of the need to preserve mummies (Alaskan. Egyptian, and Peruvian, among others) for application of new dating techniques as they develop.

In the first publication (Bombardier and Bermingham, 1999), the SED-TOX index was applied to toxicity data obtained from marine sediments collected at two sites in the Gulf of St. Lawrence Anse-a-Beaufils (Gaspe, Quebec, Canada) and Cap-aux-Meules (Magdalen Islands, Quebec, Canada). Aside from the demonstrated DoM-Ar-Ar cross-coupling connection above and the initial promise of acy-lative, 200 — 201 (Scheme 49) [79] and carbonylative, 202 —> 203 —> 204 or Suzuki-Miyaura, 203 — 205 (Scheme 50) [80] coupling, the establishment of potential DoM links to the literature-visible, already reliable, but not yet mature Heck, Sonogashira, and Grubbs metatheses will undoubtedly reap benefits for synthetic aromatic and heteroaromatic chemistry.

Lawrence Joseph Henderson was bom in Lynn, Massachusetts, an industrial city just north of Boston, on June 3, 1878. The son of a businessman, he received his early education in Salem, Massachusetts, the more upscale town of his father s family, before going to Harvard as a sixteen-year-old - actually not that unusual in the late nineteenth century. His father s business connections in the St. Pierre and Miquelon Islands of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where the young Henderson spent his vacations, stimulated his interest in learning French.
