Spraying with herbicides precautions

This is a skilled operation and should only be carried out by trained operators. A recognised certificate of competence is required by all who store, sell, recommend or apply pesticides. Method of application and timing can significantly affect herbicide activity. The following precautions should be taken when spraying  [Pg.116]

Make a careful survey of the field to determine the weeds to be controlled. Choose the most suitable and safest chemical and the best time for spraying. The risks associated with the use of any herbicides should be assessed as defined in the HSE regulations (COSHH - Control of Substances Hazardous to Health). Appropriate measures should be taken to control aity risk. [Pg.116]

Wear the correct protective clothing. Read carefully the instructions issued for that product when handling the concentrate and when spraying. [Pg.116]

Check carefully the amount of chemical to be applied and the volume of water to be used. Droplet size is veiy important when using post-emeigence herbicides, whereas with pre-emergence herbicides meditrm size droplets are just as effective as small droplets. When weeds are small, droplet size needs to be small to ensure the highest deposition on the plants. Angling the nozzles can increase deposition on small weeds. [Pg.116]

Only use approved tank mixes. Follow the manufacturer s recommendations for mixing. [Pg.116]

The herbicide paraquat (l,l -dimethyl-4,4 -bipyridinium ion) is used widely in vegetation control programs. It is estimated that paraquat has been used in the United States on 10-12 million acres annually and is registered on 63 crops. Recommended rates vary from 0.25 to 1.5 Ib/acre. Human exposure should be limited during application, due to the toxic nature of paraquat. Most worker exposure studies (1-3) have addressed the issue of occupational body burden idien engaged in paraquat application with conventional spray equipment. Precautions taken to reduce respiratory and dermal routes of entry substantially lower the risk of potential adverse health effects. [Pg.279]
