Spray drying shear rate

These mechanisms or rate processes can occur simultaneously in all processes, ranging from spray drying to fluidized beds to high-shear mixers. 

In the dry procedure, the silane is sprayed onto well-agitated filler. In order to obtain maximum efficiency, uniform silane dispersion is essential through the shear rates provided by the mixing equipment, for example, kneaders, Banbury, Hauschild, Primax, and Plowshare mixers, two-roll mills, or extruders [19b]. Most important commercial silane coating processes are continuous and have high-throughput rates. Silane addition control, dwell time, and exact temperature control within the system are essential. All parameters need adjustment depending on the type of silane employed. 

In this context Contractor et al. (1989) eonclude that the relative attrition rate depends on the attrition test method used. Knight and Bridgwater (1985) subjected spray-dried powders to a compression test, a shear test, and a test in a spiral classifier. They found that each test gave a different ranking of the materials. Werther and Reppenhagen (1999a) observed this phenomenon as they subjected various types of fluidized bed catalysts to both a cyclone attrition and a jet attrition test, each simulating one of the three major attrition sources in fluidized bed systems (cf. Sec. 5). 

Among the factors impacting binder performance in high shear equipment are the binder quantity, binder addition method (wet vs dry), solvent quantity, solvent addition rate and method (spray vs open tube), wet massing time, impeller speed, chopper speed, and equipment design and these parameters need to be optimized during the development process, typically with the aid of a statistically designed set of experiments.
