In intermediate-duration studies, spleen enlargement occurred in male and female rats treated with approximately 1 mg/kg/day 1,3-DNB in the drinking water for 16 weeks (Cody et al. 1981). Similar results were reported in rats administered 1.5 mg/kg/day 1,3-DNB by gavage for 12 weeks (Linder et al. 1986). Treatment of rats with doses of about 12-14 mg/kg/day 1,3-DNB in the drinking water for 8 weeks induced hemosiderin deposits in the spleen and spleen atrophy and fibrosis (Cody et al. 

Immunotoxicity. No information on immunotoxicity after exposure to 1,3,5-TNB by any of the three routes is available in humans or animals. Therefore, animal studies following acute, intermediate, and chronic exposure to 1,3,5-TNB via all three routes would help in estimating the potential immunotoxic effects in humans. Spleen enlargement was reported in acute-(Blackburn et al. 1988) and intermediate-duration (Cody et al. 1981 Linder et al. 1986) studies in animals. These effects, however, were secondary to adverse hematological effects. Studies in laboratory animals following acute exposure to 1,3-DNB by the oral route would help define possible effects on antibody production and cellular immunity. This information could be used to determine populations sensitive to possible exposure to 1,3-DNB at locations close to ammunition plants or in specific workplaces. 

In addition to the classical symptoms of zinc deficiency mentioned above, the following unusual conditions have been reported liver and spleen enlargement, abnormal dark adaptation and abnormalities of taste. Several laboratory procedures for diagnosing zinc deficiency are available. Measurement of zinc levels in plasma is useful in certain cases. Levels of zinc in the red cells and hair may be used for assessment of body zinc status. More accurate and useful parameters are neutrophil zinc determination and quantitative assay of alkaline phosphatase activity in neutrophils. Determination of zinc in 24 h urine may help diagnose deficiency if sickle cell disease, chronic renal disease and liver cirrhosis are ruled out. A metabolic balance study may clearly distinguish zinc-deficient subjects.

Reduced side-effects compared to PT-based ODN In contrast to PT-based CpG-ODN, dSLIM induced no liver and spleen enlargements after 7 days of consecutive intraperitoneal injection into mice.
