The high exothermicity of most oxidation reactions results in the release of a large amount of heat. If cooling, i.e., heat transfer, is not efficient, this would cause an increase in the temperature of the reaction medium. Consequently, the rate of the reaction would increase, releasing more heat and causing a further increase in the reaction rate. A spiraling effect of this type, called a thermal runaway, may eventually lead to an explosion. Indeed, runaway reactions have been found to be responsible for many major industrial accidents. [Pg.267]

Dry gas seals are in the positive seal class and have the same basic design features as mechanical face seals with one significant difference. The dry gas seal has shallow grooves cut in the rotating seal face located part way across the face. Cyclone Separators Cyclone separators are described in Chapter 7. Typically used to remove particulate from a gas stream, the gas enters tangentially at the top of a cylinder and is forced downward into a spiral motion. The particles exit the bottom while the gas turns upward into the vortex and leaves through the top of the unit. Pressure drops through cyclones are usually from 13 to 17 mm water gauge.
