Spent grains

Years ago, the spent grain from distilleries was a waste product. Today, thanks to the decanter, it is a valuable product used for animal feed. Moreover, the lower moisture content of the spent grain cake means better value to the farmer, and also means extra yield in the main distillery process. Reduced suspended solids in the centrate enables higher concentrations to be produced by the evaporators that follow the separation process. [Pg.255]

apart from decanter capacity, the distillery is interested in low suspended solids in the centrate, and the best cake dryness. [Pg.255]

During the separation the strong wort and the sparge water mn ad together into the wort kettie for boiling, and the spent grains are sold as cattle fodder, or in some cases to bread manufacturers, and as such represent an important by-product of the brewing process. [Pg.21]

DisK Presses Figure 18-157 shows a disk press. The two disks, or press wheels, converge to a veiy narrow space at the bottom. This is the point of maximum compression, which can be more than 14 times the feed pressure. The press wheels have channels to cany the hquid from the dewatered product, and they are covered with a screen plate. Wheels 1.5 m (5 ft) in diameter are used on a large press that requires about 80 connected horsepower and produces just under 1 tonne/h (0.9 ton/h) of sohds (diy basis). Typical apphcations are fibrous materials such as coffee grounds, pineapple and citrus peels and wastes, alfalfa, and brewers spent grain. [Pg.1744]

Distillers Spent Grains. Distillers spent grain is the solid residue left after the grain has been fermented to make spirits, typically whisky. This residue is the unfermentable parts of the grain and is high in fibre. Traditionally, the only outlet for this material was as cattle food or as an effluent. In addition to the fibre, protein, fat and the insoluble vitamins and minerals are present. [Pg.191]

Source of Enzymes. Culture filtrates of T. reesei strains VTT-D-79125 and Rut C-30 were used as starting material for purification of the individual enzymes and also as crude enzyme preparations in the hydrolysis experiments. Cultivations were carried out in a laboratory fermentor at 30°C for 4d on media containing Solka floe cellulose (James River Corp., New Hampshire, USA), or glucose and distiller s spent grain (Alko, Ltd., Koskenkorva, Finland). [Pg.631]

Brewery s spent grain (BSG) is the residue of malt and grain remaining in the mash kettle after the liquefaction and saccharification of starch to produce the wort. Since the manufacture of just 1 L of beer leads to about 0.04 kg of dry BSG, this material is largely available throughout the year. BSG is only used in low added-value applications such as feed, and therefore upgrading solutions are needed. [Pg.1042]
