The molecular structure of GA in aqueous solution was investigated, using UV-VIS spectroscopy, light scattering and C-NMR. It was found that GA is exclusively monomeric — mainly cyclic hemiacetal (IV), accompanied with a small amount of dehydrate (I), monohydrate (II), and dihydrate (III) structures, all of which are in fast equilibrium with each other — in non- concentrated (namely, ca.10% or less, at room temperature) GA solution (Figure 1), which is the usual condition adopted in the cross- linking reaction. It would be worthy of notice that the content of unsaturated... [Pg.121]

The reaction products between GA and amines have a tendency to be less soluble in aqueous solution, forming aggregates if the sample is not so dilute. Sample aggregation hinders most analyses, including UV spectroscopy, light scattering, and ESI- MS. The cause of solubility decrease is discussed in some detail later, at the section "The Effects". [Pg.122]

Macromolecules 200, 34,6159. The crossing of the curves at low temperatures has no meaning because the curves were shifted to have a common scale.
Product structure was determined utilizing analogous reactions, control reactions, elemental analyses mass spectroscopy, light scattering photometry and infrared spectroscopy. Selected results will be briefly described. [Pg.84]
