A phase contrast wide field transmission microscope combining the advantages of interferomic and confocal techniques has been developed [155]. Confocal operation is achieved by superimposing speckle illumination of a reference beam in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a matched speckle pattern of the object beam. The technique was applied to both dry powders and suspensions and gave good agreement with modelled results. Data acquisition time is less than a millisecond.

ANA Antinuclear factors were described for the first time by G.J. Friou et al. in 1957. These antibodies are mainly directed against nucleoprotein DNA histone and cycline A. They show a predominantly homogeneous or speckled pattern of fluorescence. ANA is not specific to the liver or to liver disease, (s. figs. 5.10, 5.11) (s. 

Treatment with sulfasalazine was associated with lupus-Uke symptoms and systemic lupus eiythematosus-related autoantibody production in 10% of patients with early rheumatoid arthritis risk factors included a systemic lupus eiythematosus-related HLA haplotype, increased serum interleukin-10 concentrations, and a speckled pattern of antinuclear antibodies (96). 

A previously healthy 63-year-old man, who had taken quinidine gluconate 972 mg/day for 9 months, developed diffuse edematous erythema on the extensive surfaces of the hands, arms, and face, with marked accentuation over the joints. His nail-fold capillaries were dilated and the shoulder abductors were shghtly weak. His erythrocyte sedimentation rate was shghtly raised (29 mm/hour) and there was a positive ANA titer (1 640) with a speckled pattern. There were no antibodies to Sm, ribonucleoprotein, SSA or SSB antigens, or histones. There was no evidence of inflammatory myopathy on electromyography, and a skin biopsy showed a mild, superficial, perivascular, lymphocytic inflammation with positive direct immunofluorescence for IgG and IgM at the dermoepidermal junction. There was no evidence of malignancy. All these abnormalities resolved rapidly after quinidine withdrawal. 

This method is used to determine the fineness of grind of a pigment in a vehicle. It uses a gage with a wedge shaped depression which has depth starting at zero and going to 100 pm. The paste material is spread with the use of metal spreader and result read from a scale of 0 to 8 (0 means depth of 100 pm, 3-65 pm, 6-25 pm, and 8-0 pm). The point of termination of the speckled pattern on the surface of the sample is the measure of the fineness of grind. 

For the experiments, only macroscopic front-surface ablation (and if necessary modification) was considered. For an in situ evaluation and the decision if ablation takes place or not, a HeNe laser was focused onto the interaction region between (femtosecond) laser and sample. In the case of ablation, changing Speckle patterns can be observed.
