9 Specific Terms and Concepts Used in Carbohydrate Chemistry 

A compound that results when an alcohol reacts with a hemiacetal, and water is released (see Hemiacetal and Ketal). 

A configurational isomer that occurs at C-1 when hemiacetal (or hemiketal) ring structures are formed. For example, a- and P-isomers are anomers. 

A tetrahedral carbon that has four different groups substituted at the four valence bonds. 

Covalent bonds that are perpendicular to the plane of a ring (see equatorial bonds).
