Successful reproductive behavior relies on the ability to identify and approach appropriate mating partners within the environment. Critically, mate recognition requires identifying species and sex characteristics of possible mates. As in many mammalian species, rodents use odor cues as the primary mechanism for mate recognition (Johnston 1983). Thus, sexually mature rodents typically display strong behavioral preferences for conspecific odors from opposite-sex individuals compared to odors from the same-sex or heterospecific individuals (Johnston 1983). [Pg.251]

This chapter describes methods for the examination of fetal abdominal and thoracic soft tissues by microdissection on either fresh (non-rodent) or fixed (rodent) specimens in order to detect structural abnormalities. With hundreds of fetuses examined for each species (rodent and non-rodent) in regulatory reproductive toxicity assessments (ICH, http //www.ich.org/fileadmin/Public Web Site/ICH ... [Pg.243]

The species (rodents) in which aluminum-induced neurobehavioral effects (e.g., changes in locomotor activity, learning and memory) have been observed fail to develop significant cytoskeletal pathology, but exhibit a number of neurochemical alterations following in vivo or in vitro exposure (Erasmus et al. [Pg.123]

The stereotyped activities are always performed continuously in the absence of normal activities, but the form of the stereotypy depends on the species. Rodents gnaw, lick, or sniff cats move their head from side to side and dogs run in circles or back and forth along a fixed route. The monkeys perform various repetitious movements with their... [Pg.304]

The mechanism of the species-specific action of thalidomide is not known. The compound crosses the placenta and has similar pharmacokinetic parameters in susceptible species (rabbit) and resistant species (rodent). The molecular structure of thalidomide and requirements for malformation are very specific. Thalidomide decomposes rapidly in water to at least 12 different products - all of which are inactive as teratogens and all of which undergo biotransformation in vivo to other products. These data... [Pg.774]
