Each fuel tube carries fuel inside 12 equi-spaced longitudinal bores in its wall. The fuel tube also serves as a coolant channel. The coolant flows through the central hole of the tube. A typical fuel bed with the BeO moderator, fuel tube and fuel compacts are shown in Fig. XXIX-12. 

Several wick stmctures are in common use. First is a fine-pore (0.14—0.25 mm (100-60 mesh) wire spacing) woven screen which is roUed into an annular stmcture consisting of one or more wraps inserted into the heat pipe bore. The mesh wick is a satisfactory compromise, in many cases, between cost and performance. Where high heat transfer in a given diameter is of paramount importance, a fine-pore screen is placed over longitudinal slots in the vessel wall. Such a composite stmcture provides low viscous drag for Hquid flow in the channels and a small pore size in the screen for maximum pumping pressure. 

However, they should remain insulated when terminating with an equipment or a device such as at the ends of generators, GTs, DATs or VTs. It is essential to avoid IPB longitudinal currents through the terminal equipment. Now the bellows necessarily should be of rubber. Figure 31.4(d) shows a rubber bellows but in this small part of the bellows the conductor field will not be nullified and occupy the space affecting the metallic structures, beams and equip-menl/devices in the vicinity. This needs to be taken into account at site and it should be ensured that the nearest structure, beam or equipment is at least 600 mm away from the IPB enclosure.
