The sweet stalks of sorghum are chewed by the natives in various countries and sorghum is the staple food and basis of beverages in much of Asia and Africa. It is usually consumed as a porridge or stiff paste prepared by adding pounded flour to hot water. Sometimes a flat cake is prepared. Also, the grain may be parched, popped, or boiled whole.
