A group of techniques employing differential selection of solute ions relies on nebulisation and ionisation of the eluent, with some discrimination of ion selection in favour of the solute. Main representatives are APCI [544] and thermospray [545]. In a thermospray interface a supersonic jet of vapour and small droplets is generated out of a heated vaporiser tube. Controlled, partial vaporisation of the HPLC solvent occurs before it enters the ion source. Ionisation of nonvolatile analytes takes place by means of solvent-mediated Cl reactions and ion evaporation processes. Most thermospray sources are fitted with a discharge electrode. When this is used, the technique is called plasmaspray (PSP) or discharge-assisted thermospray. In practice, many... [Pg.505]

Direct liquid injection (DLI) has been used even less. Hirter et al. [579] have reported the early analysis of a synthetic antioxidant mixture (Irganox 1010/1076/1098) by means of iRPLC-DLI-QMS with Cl. In early studies, the HPLC effluent was vaporised by laser radiation [593] both El and solvent-mediated Cl spectra were obtained in the on-line mode from analytically difficult molecules. However, the instrumentation was complex the sensitivity was not as good as that obtained by GC-MS and thermal decomposition was observed with other compounds. This direct introduction approach with enrichment was used for the analysis of phthalates. [Pg.513]

Once the desired mixture of lipid components is dissolved and homogenized in organic solvent, one of several techniques may be used to disperse the liposomes in aqueous solution. These methods may be broadly classified as (1) mechanical dispersion, (2) detergent-assisted solubilization, and (3) solvent-mediated dispersion. [Pg.862]

Solvent-mediated dispersion techniques used to create liposomes first involve dissolving the lipid mixture in an organic solvent to create a homogeneous solution, and then introducing this solution into an aqueous phase. The solvent may or may not be soluble in the aqueous phase to effect this process. There also may be components dissolved in the aqueous phase to be encapsulated in the developing liposomes. [Pg.862]

In summary, solvent-mediated ET studies are proving a challenge The prediction that rigid U-shaped systems undergo large structural distortions in their CS states, particularly in low dielectric solvents, raises issues of interpretation of the data that are still being resolved. [Pg.285]

The study of McMillan-Mayer level models, in which the solvent coordinates have been averaged over so that only solvent-mediated ion-ion forces need be treated, is relatively well developed. However the real forces at this level are even more poorly known than the forces at the Born-Oppenheim level referred to above. It is found that McMillan-Mayer level models can be brought into good agreement with solution thermodynamic data. [Pg.547]

Contributing to Ajj are, in addition to the solvent structural effects explicitly considered, contributions from dielectric saturation, from the liquid structure effects one has even in simple fluids, from solvent-mediated dispersion interactions of the ions, from charge-polarizability interactions of the ions, and so on. It is difficult to tell a-priori which effects are dominant or how big they are. However the collection of A 5 coefficients has characteristics that are consistent with the first named effect being dominant. [Pg.554]

Amino acids may be determined by measuring the amines obtained after the action of a carboxylase with a specific electrode for amines, which is based on a poly(vinyl chloride) membrane containing sodium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate (166) as ion exchanger and tricresyl phosphate as solvent mediator. LOD was 20 and 50 i-M for tyroxine and phenylalanine, determined as tyramine (5) and phenethylamine (33), respectively364. [Pg.1104]
