A standard testing procedure for solids-mixing equipment is available (Ref. 1). This contains details and references pertaining to sampling from solids mixtures for both batch and continuous mixing. 

A selection chart for solids mixing equipment is given by Jones (1985). 

Performance Characteristics Before selecting solids-mixing equipment, a careful study should be made of various performance characteristics. These are given here. 

Several criteria have been used in various studies to judge the performance of dry solids mixing equipment a. the uniformity of the batch with regard to either composition or some other property, b. the time required to achieve a certain uniformity, and c. the power required to mix the batch to a certain degree of uniformity. Most studies have dealt with either a. or b. Complete quantitative performance criteria should cover all three of these aspects. 

The effects of many different variables on the performance of different pieces of dry solids mixing equipment have been shown. Some of these are particle size, shape, density, and mixer speed and volume fraction loaded. Also the relative proportions of the materials being mixed has been studied for certain cases.
