Fig. 2.1. Design of solid-phase EIA. One of the immunoreactants (R or Rj, generally antibody or antigen) is immobilized on the solid phase and serves to capture the complementary reactant from the sample ( immunoextraction ). In EIA, the substance to be assayed is thus added in the second layer. Amplification of the signal of reaction between R and R is achieved with Rj which may consist of several layers.

Another type of lAC is immunoextraction. " This term refers to the use of lAC for the removal of a specific solute or group of solutes from a sample prior to the determination of these targets by a second analytical method. Off-line immimoextraction is the easiest way for combining lAC with techniques such as gas chromatography (GC) or HPLC.
