Besides the Solanum steroid alkaloids there have been found no further alkaloids of other structural type. Exceptions are the occurrence of nicotine 64) and narcotine 62) in the potato and tomato plant, of ( )-lupanine in S. lycocarpum, the new alkaloid natrine (C23H37-39NO) in S. crispum, and atropine in S. dulcamara 62). The last reference could not be confirmed by new investigations 65) but it should be mentioned that recently Schroter and Neumann 66) were able to detect both...

Potato alkaloids. The cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) contains two major glycoalkaloids, a-chaconine and a-solanine. The two components both contain the C i steroidal aglycone solanidine they differ only in the sugar moieties included in the trisaccharide part. a-Solanine and a-chaconine form up to 95% of the glycoalkaloids present in potatoes. Data on occurrence, chemistry, analysis, and toxicology of the steroidal glycoalkaloids present in potatoes have been comprehensively reviewed (77, 75). 

The chemistry of the Solanum alkaloids up to the year 1952 has been reviewed fully by V. Prelog and 0. Jeger in Chapter 21 of Volume III of The Alkaloids. More recent work, until about 1957, has been discussed briefly by the same authors in Chapter 16 of Volume VII of this series. The present chapter will deal with work reported since that time results of earlier investigations will be mentioned briefly only if necessary. But the present review will include a tabulated survey of the general occurrence of Solanum alkaloids so far known in the plant kingdom (Table I) and two additional surveys of the well-characterized steroid...
