Tomatine is a steroid alkaloid glycoside consisting of an aglycone moiety (tomatidine), and a tetrasaccharide moiety (p-lycotetraose) composed of two molecules of glucose and one each of galactose and xylose the four monosaccharides form a branched structure that is attached at the C-3 position of the aglycone (reviewed by Roddick [7], see also references therein). The structure of tomatine is shown in Fig (1).

Crude extracts were developed by a CHCl3-Me0H-NH40H solvent system on silica gel TLC plate. After being transferred to a PVDF membrane, the membrane was treated with NaI04 and stained by MAb. Spots 1-3 were identified with khasianine, solamargine, and solasonine, respectively.

The steroidal alkaloidal glycoside P-solamarine is isolated from woody night-shade Solanum dulcamara Linn., (Family Solanaceae).

Solanum steroid alkaloid glycosides. Solanum steroid alkaloids occur in plants mainly as glycosides which represent a subgroup of the steroid saponins.
