Sola river

In his expert report, Fredrick Leuchter pointed out that due to the high ground water table he found in Birkenau in 1988, it would have been impossible to dig deep pits and to light and maintain a fire in them.26 The reason for the high ground water table is that the Birkenau camp lies in the immediate vicinity of the confluence of the Sola river into the Vistula river. A few hundred meters away from the camp one finds today swampy meadows. 

According to Dr. ter Meer, the existence of the concentration camp had not crossed his mind when he accepted Ambros invitation (this was his first visit, a year before he scanned the grounds from the boiler house) to come down to look the place over. Here was an industrial delight The buna factory they wanted to build would have a capacity larger than any of the others. They would need a million tons of hard coal, and Oswiecem was on the southern border of the Silesian coal fields. The plant needed as much power as the city of Berlin, and here at Oswiecem three rivers united — the Sola, the Przemsze, and the Little Vistula. East of the town was another river which could furnish extra power and would take off the waste from the plant. 

Upstream migrating glass eels also swim toward compounds with earthy and green (vegetable) odors. These are pyrazines, thiazoles, and alcohols of the cyclohexanol type (Sola, 1995). One of these compounds, 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine, is common in rivers and lakes (Hwang eta/., 1984). 

The USCG regulates all ships that moor in the U.S. ports (both on the exterior coasts and on rivers or lakes). The United States is a signatory to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS)41 and the USCG will enforce the corresponding regulations, which are issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO)42.
