Reliability and availability Does the running system reliably continue to perform correctly over extended periods of time What proportion of time is the system up and running In the presence of failure, does it degrade gracefully rather than shut down completely Reliability is measured as the mean time to system failure availability is the proportion of time the system is functioning. Both qualities are typically dealt with by making the architecture fault-tolerant using duplicated hardware and software resources.

Once in place, an LIS must be supported, and maintained. Software modules and operating systems may have to be upgraded and synchronized. Interfaces to laboratory instruments and communication links with clinical systems also frequently require upgrading and support. Although one might hope that an LIS could evolve gracefully and not require replacement, in practice all information systems inevitably become obsolete, and a new system life cycle begins.

The software is designed so that it can be used by trainees as well as by qualified staff and analysts. Trainees could find fundamental concepts, and analysts some global calculation codes such as GRACE, PEACO, THERMOS and HEX 120. Therefore, the purpose of the NURESIM is not only to be used for education and training, but it could be used as a compilation of databases and codes for making reactor physics calculations. Indeed, the above-mentioned codes have been used for calculating some static reactor physics parameters of the Dalat Nuclear Research Reactor in Viet Nam.
