Since the advent of efficient and robust simulation and optimization solution engines" and flowsheeting software packages that allow for relatively easy configuration of complex models, numerous integrated, high fidelity, and multiscale process model applications have been deployed in industrial plants to monitor performance and to determine and capture improvements in operating profit. 

Thermodynamic software packages may be used to find equilibrium compositions at prescribed temperatures and pressures. Such calculations require knowledge of feed components and products and their thermodynamic properties and are based on Gibbs free energy minimization techniques. Examples of thermodynamic packages may be found in Smith and Missen (Chemical Reaction Equilibrium Analysis Theory and Algorithms, Wiley, 1982) and in Walas (Phase Equilibria in Chemical Engineering, Butterworths, 1985). 

Many spectroscopic software packages come with search engines, or search engines can be purchased as add-ons to a package. The software will work on commercial libraries or provide mechanisms for generating libraries from you own spectral data. 

Phase equilibrium is also important in the design of an acid gas injection scheme. In fact, the first step in the design process is the construction of a phase envelope for the acid gas under consideration. This provides the engineer with a map indicating which phases will be encountered and under which conditions. These calculations are tedious fortunately, software packages are available for the calculations. 

There are other software packages available for doing such calculations, including those available in general-purpose process simulators. The design engineer is wise to verify that the models selected are applicable to acid gas-water mixtures. Failure to do so could lead to significant errors. 

Portions or all of the more complex calculation processes, using specific consequence models, have been incorporated into a few commercially available software packages (AIChE-CCPS, 1989). These programs should be used by risk analysts with extensive engineering experience, as significant judgment will still be required.
