Soft matter deposition

CVD diamond films are not stable on mechanically stressed metals which contain iron, chromium, or nickel and hence steel. In this case films of boron nitride are an alternative.

It is of some interest to consider the situation where one of the ideahzed 2D systems that have been addressed can be followed in a layer-by-layer growth mode from a strictly 2D plane to one that is more 3D like. Such is the situation in the formation of multilayer molecular films adsorbed to uniform substrates or where epitaxial metal or soft matter growth is realized in chemical vapor deposition, molecular beam epitaxy or polymeric deposition systems. The hneshape discussion above has to be modified to account for the development of the third dimension of order in the system. Conceptually this is rather straightforward. The deposition of mass and charge selected ions onto surfaces is underway but is in its infancy. How do the ions survive the collision with a surface This question has a myriad of answers depending on many variables and will have a future in investigative studies. A soft landing is now a possibility (280) and allows the potential spectroscopic investigation of trapped ions. So far no transition metal ions have been examined using this method but it is only a matter of time. Soft landings via inert gas matrices also have potential in the surface deposition of mass selected clusters.
