The quaternary isoselenazolium perchlorates 86 can be formed, following a [3+1 + 1] route, from 3-chloroprop-2-eniminium salts 83, sodium selenocyanate, and an arylamine. The substrate 83 reacts with sodium selenocyanate to give the 3-cyanoselenoprop-2-eniminium salt 84 subsequently converted into 85 by treatment with the arylamine, which cyclizes on heating to isoselenazolium salt 86 (Scheme 29) <19768273, 2001HOU921>.
